I’ve just walked back into my apartment, having taken Bree back to her place, and all I can do is flop down onto the couch. I’m too tired for anything else.

When she first suggested leaving, I’d wanted to ask her to stay for another night, until she said she needed to do her laundry and I realized she didn’t have a change of clothes. She only had the dress she’d been wearing on Friday, so she needed to go home, which was a damn shame. And then I realized there was another reason she couldn’t stay. She’d arrived here on Friday in a cab, and I can hardly take her to Max’s with me in the morning, before driving us all into work together. How would I explain that to Max? I mean, obviously he’s gonna have to know about us eventually, but I’d rather spend some time with Bree first, and work my way up to informing her brother that I’m in love with her.

I lean back, closing my eyes, relaxing into the cushions as I let out a slow sigh. The weekend has been amazing. Completely exhausting. But amazing. And I can’t help smiling as I think back over all the things we’ve done together.

Among the most notable, I guess, was not using a condom. Like I told Bree at the time, I’ve never done that before. And we didn’t bother all weekend. It seemed kinda pointless after that first time. And besides, I loved the way she felt too much to put any barriers between us.

That made me think about the past, and the future, though, and on a few occasions over the weekend, while she’s been sleeping and I’ve been watching her, I’ve contemplated how it might have been, if we’d gotten together all those years ago. I’d have married her in a heartbeat, and I know we wouldn’t have made it through a year without having our first child. When she married her loser ex-husband, though, I put all those thoughts behind me, deciding that kids weren’t for me… that without Bree, they had no place in my life. But over our weekend together, I’ll admit, it’s something that’s filtered back into my consciousness from time to time, and that image of the two of us sitting together, our infant child between us, bound by our love, has occasionally filled my mind, and made me smile. And given the way I’ve lived my life over the last nine or ten years, having such domesticated thoughts has surprised me. Although not as much as introducing Bree to my way of doing things…

I knew she was interested – keen, even – just from her reactions. But what I hadn’t expected was her willingness to try. And I loved the fact that she was so inquisitive. It’s not what I’m used to, I’ll admit, but I thought it was fascinating. And it was healthy. And remarkably liberating. She wasn’t just submitting to me, blankly, and letting me do whatever I wanted.
